So far the next generation of home consoles is looking to be very awesome but also very expensive. The PlayStation 4 will cost $399 while Microsoft’s Xbox One will be retailing a whole hundred dollars more at $499. These prices are steep and in this harsh economic climate hardware purchases are few and far between and in some cases there can only be one. So what exactly are Sony and Microsoft doing to persuade gamers not to just take a leap into the next generation but to dive fully into a specific companies promises with hopes that they will deliver an experience unlike any other? The answer is simple, GAMES! Yes, it is well known that both companies will be integrating within their respective consoles a vast array of multi-media options such as DVR support, live-streaming, movies, music, Skype, motion gaming and social networking. Although these features will be well received by the consumer they will not do much in the way of swaying those consumer dollars in their favor. In the end it is Sony and Microsoft’s exclusives that will steal the hearts and wallets of gamers. Luckily for us gamers the next generation is filled to the brim with exclusives whether it be full fledged games such as Sony’s Infamous: Second Son or Microsoft’s timed DLC exclusivity for both Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4. Sony has come out to the public and announced that there are 30 games in development for the PlayStation 4 with 20 of those games being exclusives and 12 of which a completely new franchises like The Order: 1866. Microsoft is not slacking in the exclusive department either with their announcement of 15 exclusive games coming to the Xbox One within the first year. What seemed like a dying breed, the exclusive game is finally making it’s return and in a much grander fashion. As the current generation of hardware slowly reaches it’s end, the amount of exclusive content is rapidly diminishing, with only prequels of old franchises and small gems like the Last of Us and Journey making it’s way through the fray. The next wave of consoles is looking to break this awful trend and bring to the forefront what gamers want. Regardless of which console gamers choose to adopt and furiously support one things is for sure, the next generation is here and it is well worth diving into.
